Many are wondering:  How is the Diocese of Arlington Protecting Children and Assisting Victims of Clergy Abuse?

Many parishioners at the Brainstorming Session at ST. MARK on October 21, 2018 (the follow-up session to our Listening Session from September 16, 2018) asked what the Diocese of Arlington is doing to protect children, report abuse, and assist victims of sexual abuse by member of the clergy.

The website for the Diocesan Office of Child Protection and Victim Assistance answers those questions and provides many resources including:

  • What is the procedure to report a suspected incidence of child abuse or sexual misconduct?
  • What Bishop Burbidge has done, said in his podcasts, and written about:
    • the investigation by the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Virginia
    • the clergy sex abuse scandal
    • the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report
    • Archbishop Theodore McCarrick
  • Vatican and U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) recent responses
  • Important Notices concerning Clergy or Lay Employees
  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the clergy sex abuse scandal, including:
    • What does the Office of Child Protection and Victim Assistance do?
    • Do any priests now serving have credible allegations of abuse against them?
    • Does Bishop Burbidge meet with victims?
    • How are our seminarians kept safe?
    • How are lay people involved?
    • What happens when an allegation is received?
    • Where does the money for settlements come from?
    • Has the Diocese of Arlington contributed to settlements for any other diocese?
    • What can I do?

The Diocese has provided these resources to inform and be transparent about the abuse crisis.  You may access the answers to these questions and more at the following links:
